Islamic Faith Fundamentals

A clear and accessible introduction to the core beliefs and practices that form the foundation of Islam.

The Five Pillars of Islam

The five pillars are the core practices that every Muslim strives to fulfil. They shape daily life, build character, and strengthen the bond between a person and their Creator.

1

Shahada — Declaration of Faith

The sincere declaration that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His final messenger. This is the foundation of Islam and the entry point into the faith.

2

Salah — Prayer

Muslims pray five times a day — at dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and night. Prayer is a direct connection between the individual and God, offering reflection, gratitude, and spiritual nourishment.

3

Zakat — Charity

Muslims who have sufficient wealth are required to give 2.5% of their savings annually to those in need. Zakat purifies wealth and promotes social justice and compassion.

4

Sawm — Fasting (Ramadan)

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset — abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs. It builds self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and closeness to God.

5

Hajj — Pilgrimage

Once in a lifetime, every Muslim who is physically and financially able is required to make the pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca). It is the ultimate act of submission to God and unity among Muslims worldwide.

The Six Articles of Faith

These are the foundational beliefs that every Muslim holds in their heart. They form the worldview through which a Muslim understands life, purpose, and the universe.

Belief in Allah (God)

The belief in one God — the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of the universe. God is merciful, just, and all-knowing.

Belief in Angels

Angels are beings created by God from light. They carry out His commands — from delivering revelation to recording our deeds.

Belief in the Holy Books

God sent scriptures to guide humanity — including the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Quran, which Muslims believe is the final and preserved revelation.

Belief in the Prophets

From Adam to Muhammad, God sent prophets to every nation. Muslims honour all of them, including Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

Belief in the Day of Judgement

A day when every soul will be held accountable for their actions. This belief motivates Muslims to live with purpose, integrity, and kindness.

Belief in Divine Decree

God has knowledge and wisdom over all things. While humans have free will, everything ultimately unfolds according to God's wisdom and plan.
